Northumberland VADOC Release Route
A person sentenced in Northumberland County may begin at Northern Neck Regional Jail and transfer into state authority. That transfer is not a community release. It changes the custodian and the search tool. VADOC institutions house sentenced people, while VADOC Community Corrections supervises qualifying probationers and parolees. The Virginia Parole Board decides discretionary parole for people who remain legally eligible, but VADOC carries out custody, release processing, and supervision.
While incarcerated or on active VADOC supervision, a person may appear in the Inmate & Supervisee Locator. A prison release onto probation or parole can leave an active result because physical custody ended while state supervision continues. At full discharge, the current locator may stop returning the person. That no-result is not a historical discharge certificate. Use the signed release packet, VADOC records, court order, or a saved notification event.
The Northumberland County released-inmate search traces the earlier regional-jail and court stage when the state DOC ID or transfer point is not yet known.
| Stage | Meaning | Best source |
|---|---|---|
| NNRJ to VADOC | Continued state custody | NNRJ transfer record and VADOC locator |
| Projected release | Planning calculation | VADOC locator or staff confirmation |
| Facility release | Person leaves VADOC custody | Actual event and signed Order of Release |
| Community supervision | Custody ended, legal oversight continues | Locator and District 33 |
| Full discharge | Relevant custody and supervision ended | Discharge record and court file |
Search VADOC Release Status
The VADOC Inmate & Supervisee Locator covers people currently in VADOC custody or supervision. It can include prisons, probation and parole districts, certain hospitals, local or regional jail prisoners under VADOC authority, and CCAP participants. Data update daily but carry an accuracy and timeliness warning. It is not proven to be a permanent archive of every fully discharged person.
- Use a seven-digit DOC ID when available for the narrowest search.
- Otherwise enter at least the first three letters of the first name and the full last name.
- Add location, race, gender, or age only when needed to separate namesakes.
- Accept the disclaimer and complete the CAPTCHA.
- Compare identity, location, status, and the exact projected-release label shown.
- Confirm a completed release with the listed facility, district, notification event, or signed papers.
The official locator interface and a privacy-appropriate result are shown in the VADOC source capture:
A displayed Projected Release Date is a forecast. Preserve the capture date and wording. Do not state that departure occurred until an actual release event or record confirms it.
VADOC Release Record Packet
VADOC distinguishes an anticipated date from a completed event. Advance release is normally an expected date and can change. The actual release-date event means the person is no longer in VADOC custody. The facility-release process includes documents read, signed, witnessed, and dated. Strong record targets include the notification-of-release letter, signed Order of Release, applicable Conditions of Probation or Conditions of Parole, actual release date and type, and staff release checklist.
The VADOC facility-release page explains the official process and document path:
VADOC says a person whose sentence is satisfied is discharged or leaves on parole, and release is completed by 11:59 p.m. on the assigned date, weather permitting. That day-wide requirement is not a promise of a morning hour. Conditions and orders are far stronger evidence than subtracting a generic credit rate from the imposed term.
- Projected date
- VADOC's current planning calculation, which can move.
- Actual release
- The completed end of VADOC physical custody.
- Parole
- Conditional release for a legally eligible prisoner before the otherwise applicable endpoint.
- Probation
- Court-ordered community supervision that can replace or follow confinement.
- Discharge
- The recorded end of the relevant state custody or supervision term.
Request Northumberland VADOC Records
Ask the manager, warden, superintendent, or Chief of the Probation and Parole District that holds the record. A request may also go to VADOC centrally. Name the person, DOC ID if known, approximate release, and the existing documents sought. Ask for electronic copies, segregable nonexempt portions, and a cost estimate. Inmate and probation or parole case records can have confidentiality exemptions, so do not assume the whole file is public.

FOIA guidance

FOIA@vadoc.virginia.gov
The VADOC FOIA channel accepts requests through several methods. Virginia's five-working-day response rule and actual-cost framework apply, but a response can grant, partly grant, withhold with a citation, report that records were not found, or invoke the permitted extension. Form 17 concerns inactive-offender records, while Form 14 provides a consent route in relevant cases.
Separate the state request from the Northumberland court and NNRJ requests. The court can provide the commitment or amended order. NNRJ can provide jail credit context and the transfer out of regional custody. VADOC calculates the state term and holds its own release packet. Asking each custodian for the record it owns avoids a broad request that crosses agency lines and may miss the key document.
Retention also requires precise wording. VADOC records procedure supports electronic handling of files for people released to supervision, discharged, deceased, or otherwise outside DOC. It does not establish a public numeric retention promise. Ask which schedule applies to the requested record series. If a result is missing from the current locator, do not substitute the last visible online date for the actual discharge date.
Note: The existence of signed release documents in VADOC systems does not guarantee public disclosure of every field.
VADOC Projected Release Dates
Virginia uses more than one sentence-credit framework. VADOC separates legacy Good Conduct Allowance from Earned Sentence Credit. Individual inputs include jail credit before VADOC receipt, consecutive or concurrent terms, active versus suspended time, offense eligibility, credit class, discipline, restoration, and later court orders. A universal “take 15 percent off” rule would be wrong.
For serious offenses listed in Virginia Code § 53.1-202.3(A), the current statutory ceiling of 4.5 credit days per 30 served supports the familiar approximate 85-percent shorthand. Other eligible offenses can earn different rates by level, including 15, 7.5, 3.5, or zero days per 30. Classification can change, and credits may be forfeited. The official projected date reflects VADOC's calculation at that time, not safe arithmetic by a reader.
Virginia also largely abolished discretionary parole for felony acts committed on or after January 1, 1995, subject to statutory exceptions. Legacy eligibility is complex. A public Parole Board grant is a decision, not same-day physical release. The later VADOC event and signed order confirm departure. Use the Northumberland Release Date Lookup when the issue is how a forecast was computed.
A detainer can alter the practical meaning of the projected endpoint. VADOC custody may end while another jurisdiction begins custody. Weather or operating conditions may affect processing within the assigned day. Disciplinary forfeiture, restored credit, corrected jail credit, or an amended order can move the date. Preserve both the earlier projection and later actual event, each with its label, rather than treating the change as an error.
VADOC Release Notification Handoff
Virginia local and regional jails use VINE, but state custody now uses NAAVI. A VINE registration made while a Northumberland person is at NNRJ does not carry into VADOC. An eligible user must register separately in NAAVI after state transfer. This handoff prevents the mistaken belief that a local-jail alert will follow the person through a state sentence.
The VADOC notification page distinguishes advance and actual release events:
Advance notice is anticipated and may change. The actual event says the person is no longer in VADOC custody. Continuing probation or parole must still be checked through the locator and supervising district.
Northumberland Supervision After Release
Northumberland state supervision is handled by VADOC Probation and Parole District 33 in Warsaw. The shared office serves Essex, Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, and Westmoreland Counties. A locator match at District 33 is evidence that state supervision remained active on the search date. It does not publish a diary of compliance with each condition.

Local NNRJ Community-Based Probation and NNRJ PreTrial are different programs with different orders and contact deadlines. They should not be blended with VADOC parole or probation. For completed state supervision, seek a discharge order or record from the supervising authority and relevant court. A disappearance from the locator is a reason to request that record, not proof by itself.
The Virginia Parole Board has a different job from District 33. It publishes public meeting information and monthly decisions for discretionary matters, using the terms Grant and Not Grant. A grant does not mean the person walked out that day. Required notice and VADOC processing follow. The final state custody event and signed release documents remain the sources for physical departure, while District 33 records describe any supervision that continues.
